So I’ve had something that mildly resembles “Free Time”, and I’m Utterly Bewildered.

August 6, 2009 at 2:22 am (Uncategorized)

I’ve been surfing the world wide web, and I’ve been checking out some of the graphic design portfolios out there…and I’ve come (once again) to the conclusion that I have soooo much farther to go before I can call myself a “Graphic Designer”.  At least, not one that has anything to really brag about.  But, at the same time, it has given me new inspiration and motivation to keep producing projects. I’d like to produce some trifold brochures, or some flyers.

Since doing my Graphic Design Internship through Northeastern State University, I’ve also begun to see the Graphic Design element in EVERYTHING.

I see packaging, greeting cards, labels, and even things like bandaids differently.

So for anyone out there who has actually web stumbled onto this blog, stay tuned for more to come!

This is the business card I designed for myself. It’s modeled after a template web site I made for myself. It seems simple enough.

Drysdales Business Card #2

This is the 2nd layout I made for Drysdales.

This is the 2nd layout I made for Drysdales.

This is the 2nd business card I did for Drysdales–I wanted to give them a little variety. I created these cards with whitespace aroundthe edges so that whether they choose to use a laserjet or an inkjet printer, their cards should print alright.

Drysdales Business Card #1

1st Business Card for Drysdales

1st Business Card for Drysdales

This is the 1st business card template that I made for the company I work for, Drysdales. The idea behind this is that I create a folder with an editable .psd file of the business card layout, with a text file that gives instructions on how to edit and save the file as a .jpeg, and import the image into a business card template in microsoft word, so that they can print some cards themselves when they need to, using their printer and perforated cardstock.

So here is the business card that he and I are both happiest with of the 3 I did.  It’s colorful, and showcases his work while simultaneously providing contact info.

Photography Business Card – 2nd Try

This is my second try at a business card for my Photographer friend

This is my second try at a business card for my Photographer friend

So, after the first try at making a business card for a freelance photographer, I had a “well duh” moment, and realized I could use HIS photography to adorn his business card.  So here we have a classic example of differences in how colors display from computer to computer.

When I made this card, I used a photo of his for the background, and to make his name “pop” i added a glow. Now, the glow color I see on my screen is a deep purple color.

The color HE sees, however, is girly hot pink.  So scratch that.  However, he came up with an idea to use his most famous photo, a piece called “The Green Empire”, taken with his Macro Lens.

So I tried again!

Photography Business Cards – 1

This is my 1st attempt at a business card for my Photographer friend, Justin.

This is my 1st attempt at a business card for my Photographer friend, Justin.

I pretty much exhausted the Red Button Productions logo, and after working with it for so long, I was tired of red and black.  So designing business materials for my Photographer friend seemed like a fresh change.

This business card is pretty straightforward.  I took a royalty free image of  a feather, adjusted its color to my liking, and matched the text in brown.

After looking at this business card for awhile though, I decided this is not the best way it could be done.

Business Cards – Red Button Productions 3

This is part of the set of PROPER business cards, with a name, job title, and web site added.

In this version of the business card, I adjusted the gradient on the background.  This is a simple angled gradient in photoshop, but it almost looks like there is a spotlight on the logo and contact info, which I liked.  Again, it is vertical, which is a little different, but I like the way it turned out.

This card is dramatically different from the previous card.  For one thing, it’s vertical, which is less common than the horizontal layout.  It’s also very dark.  I envision this on cardstock with a gloss finish to it, or else, a textured cardstock with a matte background, and shiny letters.

One thing I learned about print media is that your availability of printer equipment, and your budget, greatly affect what kind of layout you can do.  As you can see, this layout, unlike the 1st business card, has no margin. the color goes right to the edges.  Some printers lack the ability to  print to the edges of the paper, and if you don’t have access to one that can, you either have to adjust your design to include a margin accepted by the printer, or else print your cards on the paper in such a way that there is margin on the paper around the card graphic and then you trim them down after you print. Either of these options will increase the expense of the cards produced.

Business Cards – Red Button Productions 1, Take 2!

This is the alteration to the business card after I realized there was no name.

This is the alteration to the business card after I realized there was no name.

Here you see I have made a few changes; I moved the tagline down to be flush with the underline at the bottom of the card, I added a name, a URL to the web site of the company, a job title, and I changed the font.

Normally, I like font consistency, but the thick arial black font was just too bulky and busy when the extra info was added, so I switched to a lighter weight font for the address and phone numbers, and made the name of the individual the most emphasized piece of text on the card.
